The Way I see it #138

I had a little time to kill today before I met up with a friend for a run. After my back started aching from sitting and reading on the grass for too long, I headed over to the Starbucks on the corner. I ordered a non-fat caramel machiato (sp?). It was delicious. As I got back into the car, I noticed this quote on the side of the cup:

The good life is the middle way
Between Ambition and Compassion,
Between Action and Reflection,
Between Company and Solitute,
Between Hedonism and Abstinence,
Between Passion and Judgement,
Between the cup of coffee and the glass of wine.

-Joy McInerney

What the heck does that last sentence mean??? Between the cup of coffee and the glass of wine lies what ....Juice? Water? Bliss? Blank Stares? At first reading of the quote I got that warm fuzzy feeling and thought, "Oh,one of life's truths has been spoken". Then I got confused and sort of befudled. Is the good life truly in the middle? Should I be striving for this middle place of ambivalence? I think I understand what the writer is getting at, that is except for the last sentence. Dave read it and said, "Yippie, lets all be mediocre!".

As I was searching for a picture of a starbucks online (remember, there is no camera in the house), I found a Seattle P.I. article about this women's group that was unhappy about the following Starbucks quote because they thought that it promotes homosexuality and therefor accused Starbucks of promoting Homosexuality (gasp! oh no! how could they?). Now that I think about it, I believe I once enjoyed a drink in a cup with this exact quote.

I also remember thinking that it was cool that Starbucks would put such a liberal quote on their cup. Anyways, I think I got my $4 worth of drink for the first time today.
